Almost every window made in the last twenty years locks, so whether it locks is the least useful question. What matters is what happens when someone applies a crowbar to the corner of the sash. What does multi-point locking actually mean?

A multi-point mechanism is a steel gearbox running the full height of the opening sash, linked to the handle. Turning the handle drives locking points out along that strip at once. A typical casement window has three or four points on a small opener and five or six on a tall one. The design is about load distribution. A single central latch concentrates all the force on one spot. Spread the restraint across five points and the sash must deform along its whole length before anything gives.

The keeps matter as much as the bolts
A locking point is only as strong as the keep it engages. On a well built frame the keeps screw through into the steel or aluminium reinforcement inside the profile, not just the plastic outer skin. Ask what the keeps fix into. If the answer is the profile wall alone, the bolt will pull the keep out long before the bolt itself fails.

Why is the handle the weak point on older windows?

On many windows fitted in the 1990s and early 2000s the handle is a die-cast espagnolette with a small square spindle and a modest internal cam. It is not locked in any meaningful sense, and some have a push button that yields to a screwdriver. Because the mechanism depends on the handle staying locked, defeating the handle defeats every locking point at once.

A key-locking handle changes that. Turning the key drives a plate that blocks the spindle, so the bolts cannot retract. The upgrade is often possible on existing windows without replacing the unit, making it one of the more sensible improvements to a house you are not ready to reglaze. Consider the gearbox too: a loose handle, or one that needs the sash lifted to travel, is a worn gearbox.

Keep the key out of the lock
A key-locking handle with the key left in it is not locked. It is also a fire hazard, so store keys somewhere consistent, close to the window and known to everyone in the house, rather than in the lock.

How does the glazing affect window security?

The first factor is bead position. On an internally beaded window the strips holding the sealed unit sit on the room side, out of reach from outside. On an externally beaded window they sit outside, and if levered off the whole unit lifts out without touching the lock. Every window we fit is internally beaded as standard.

The second is the glass. Toughened glass is strong until it fails, then collapses into granules and leaves an open hole. Laminated glass has a plastic interlayer bonded between two panes, so broken fragments stay stuck to it and the pane remains a barrier. For ground floor windows and anywhere hidden from the street, laminated glass in the outer pane is worth specifying, and it cuts noise as a useful side benefit.

Which standards should you look for?

Two references do the heavy lifting in the UK. PAS 24 is the enhanced security standard for doors and windows, and a PAS 24 window has been physically tested against defined manual attacks with tools reflecting real burglary methods. The police backed Secured by Design scheme certifies member products against those standards independently. Approved Document Q, published by the Ministry of Housing on gov.uk, sets security requirements for accessible windows and doors in new dwellings. Replacement windows are not caught by Document Q, but specifying to the same level is a sensible default.

Are some window styles inherently more secure?

Style influences security less than hardware quality does. Tilt and turn windows use a substantial perimeter mechanism with many engagement points, and inward opening sashes are hard to lever because the stop is outside. Sliding sash windows historically had only a meeting rail fastener, but modern versions add sash stops and restrictors.
